WSP (formerly Golder and Wood E&I) has new opportunities for Professional Archaeologists/Field Directors to join our Heritage team on a full time with benefits basis.  We have open positions in our Victoria, Kamloops, Kelowna, Vancouver, Castlegar and Fort St. John offices.  We are open to other locations across the province for the right candidate. Beyond leading field programs, the successful candidate will assist with in the growth of the archaeology business in their respective geography and across the province and will gain valuable and diverse work experience throughout BC as part of our regional team. You will also have the ability to work on multidisciplinary projects that provide opportunities for learning and personal growth.

As a Field Director, your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out archaeological survey, test excavation, or mitigative excavation in cultural resource management and in compliance with Heritage Conservation Act permits
  • Leading archaeological field programs
  • Preparing and contributing to proposals
  • Working with Indigenous community members in a respectful and collaborative manner
  • Assisting with managing project scope, schedule, and cost, including invoicing
  • Participating in Indigenous community relationship-building
  • Undertaking analysis and preparing technical reports
  • Supervising junior staff and Indigenous workers where appropriate
  • Participating in WSP’s Health & Safety program
  • Demonstrating a “Safety First” focus and acting as a role model to other staff

You will have a background in:

  • Field Director status for the relevant BC culture area (Northwest Coast, Interior Plateau, Sub-Arctic/Boreal Forest) in good standing
  • Experience identifying, recording, and evaluating the full range of archaeological site types expected in your region.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated positive relationships with Indigenous communities in their respective region
  • An ability and willingness to perform field work in a variety of weather conditions and varying durations
  • Proficiency with standard data collection equipment including GPS and hand-held tablets. Experience with Survey 1,2,3 and ESRI Field Maps is an asset.
  • Strong writing skills and experience writing interim and final permit reports
  • An ability to contribute to a positive teamwork environment as well as to work independently
  • Solid MS Office skills
  • Valid driver’s licence (Class 5) and an ability at times to get to local project work sites or the office
  • UTV and First Aid Certification would be considered an asset
