Job Description:

Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP is seeking an Archaeologist – Field Director for a full-time position based in Enderby, BC. We are a growing cultural and natural resource management company under the Splatsin Development Corporation. Our approach is focused on the protection and conservation of archaeological resources and their connection to Secwepemc people, culture, and traditions. Yucwmenlúcwu provides technical support to the Splatsin community and archaeological services to our many clients and partners.

We are seeking a highly skilled individual who wishes to develop their career with our diverse team of professionals. This position will involve both field, office, and lab-based responsibilities including archaeological assessments, research, artifact cataloguing, reporting, and equipment maintenance. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and assist with archaeological field assessments and research
  • Assist with artifact cataloguing, reporting, and permitting
  • Liaise with First Nations, proponents, landowners, and regulatory agencies
  • Assist the environment, forestry, and culture heritage teams as necessary
  • Mentor and train junior technicians and Splatsin community members
  • Active participation in the Yucwmenlúcwu Safety Management System

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a minimum of 3 years’ experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Heritage Conservation Act and regulatory process
  • Previous experience supervising archaeological assessments, excavations and construction monitoring
  • Demonstrated proficiency completing assigned tasks on time and on budget
  • Proven ability to mentor and train staff
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline oriented environment
  • Strong aptitude for technical writing and reporting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with a diverse team
  • Discretion and respect for confidentiality
  • Positive, diplomatic, and understanding personality
  • Valid driver’s license and clean drivers abstract

Preferred Skills and Attributes:

  • Eligible for Field Director status in the Interior Plateau culture area under Bulletin 17 requirements of the BC Archaeology Branch
  • Eligible to hold BC Heritage Conservation Act Section 12 or 14 permits in the Interior Plateau culture area
  • Professional specializations in any of the following: faunal analysis, human osteology, lithic analysis, statistical analysis, geoarchaeology, paleobotany, or remote sensing techniques
  • Previous experience working with a First Nation organization
  • General understanding of the First Nations consultation process
  • Basic knowledge of surficial geology and landforms
