Millennia Research Limited, an archaeological consulting company located in Victoria, has openings for several casual archaeological assistants.  The positions are temporary and primarily will work on a major civil infrastructure project.  Work is in the Greater Victoria area. Work primarily involves field tasks.

Applicants must have a Bachelors or graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology or a closely-related field. Archaeological field school or equivalent experience is also a minimum requirement. Field assistants must be physically fit and agile, reliable, and be willing to follow strict safety protocols as we will be working with heavy machinery and near deep excavations. Field technicians must also work well with others in a team environment, take direction from supervisors,

  • Attention to detail
  • Valid WCB OFA Level 1 certificate
  • High level of physical fitness
  • Valid BC driver’s licence
  • Commitment to safety and following all rules and procedures as required including the Millennia Safety Handbook and the Project Safety Plan. Attendance at safety meetings and orientations will be required
  • Ability to work flexible hours (i.e., short-notice shortened or extended hours and weekend work is possible). Weather or changes in the Project plan may result in cancellations or delay the start of work or require a work day to end early.
  • Work in inclement weather will be likely
  • Suitable field clothing (e.g., long pants, sleeved shirts, layers that can be removed based on weather changes, rain gear if needed) and CSA approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) not supplied by the company (e.g., steel-toe boots). Millennia will supply hard hats, eye protection, ear protection, and high-visibility vests for Field Assistants to use, however you are welcome to bring your own CSA approved PPE to wear on-site. Full PPE (hard hat, eye protection, high-visibility vest or shirt, steel-toe boots, long pants, ear protection when necessary) is required when working around heavy machinery.

Technical writing experience, WHMIS certification, work on construction sites, and Transferable Reliability Status for Public Works and Government Services Canada (basic security screening) would all be very useful but not essential.
