There are a number of career options for archaeologists in British Columbia. Archaeologists are employed by museums, government (including federal, provincial, and First Nation), as well as the private sector. Most archaeologists are employed by the private sector to evaluate developments to ensure compliance with the Heritage Conservation Act.

Nature of the Work
Archaeological work includes fieldwork (both survey and excavation), artifact processing and analysis, and report preparation. The majority of entry-level jobs involve survey often in remote areas (primarily for forestry and oil/gas clients). Field conditions can be difficult and the work is often physically demanding. Pay scales vary widely from company to company.

Required Qualifications
Qualifications vary from company to company and from job to job. Many companies require a bachelor’s degree in archaeology or anthropology and previous fieldwork experience (such as a field school). Outdoor experience, survey/orienteering skills, computer skills (Microsoft Office, ArcView, AutoCAD), writing skills, and strong interpersonal skills are also important.

BC Association of Professional Archaeologists
BC Association of Professional Archaeologists seeks an Administrator/Executive Assistant. This self-employed individual with their own office space will:
- provide remote administrative support for the BCAPA Directors
- attend monthly Directors teleconference meetings and draft minutes
- maintain active paper records/files and electronic records of the Association
- maintain/edit website using software installed on own PC
- accommodate the BCAPA phone line (Shaw preferred) and house the BCAPA tel/fax machine
- provide onsite storage for BCAPA archives
- regularly pick up BCAPA mail sent to a rented P.O. Box
- make periodic as-required deposits to the Royal Bank
- be located in the Greater Vancouver or Greater Victoria area.
The incumbent will be a highly organized individual who is trustworthy and self-motivated and able to function independently yet judge when consultation with Directors is appropriate. The Administrator is often the first point of contact at the BCAPA so must be professional and diplomatic. Must represent all members equally and without bias. Confidentiality is important. Able to effectively communicate via email. Familiarity with the business of consulting archaeology in B.C. beneficial.
In addition to familiarity with MS Office and email programs in general, specific skills include proficiency with MS Word mail merge, and MS Access tables, reports and data sorting. Expect to work about 20 hours a month on average, though this will vary widely during the year (time commitment will generally intensify from November through March).
